Re: Dipper Gourd Seeds

What i'm basically interested is finding some of the dipper type gourds. These have the long necks that grow in all different manner of ways. I have grown the large birdhouse gourds with great success several times. If anyone has the dipper type seeds, send me your address and i will send a SASE for...

Dipper Gourd Seeds

I'm looking for some dipper gourds seeds. If anyone has more than they need, I would like to have some. I can send a SASE if you will give me your address. My daughter and I would like to try and grow some. I have had great success at growing the gourds for using as martin housing. I would like to h...

Re: Carthage, Mo Roost Report

I think it is sad that the roost was bulldozed away. Martins had been using this sight for a number of years.
With Purple Martins being a federally protected bird, it should be against the law to destroy their roosting
sights. I would be ashamed of myself whoever was responsible for doing it.

I have gone to see this roosting sight twice now, and it is an enormous
amount of martins. They are roosting in an area just north of the walmart
there in Carthage, Mo. Very exciting to see.

Carthage, MO Purple martin roost

I tried to upload a video of the purple martin roost in Carthage, MO but it was to large a file. So I uploaded it on you tube if anyone is interested in viewing it. Enjoy!! It is a little lengthy but if you enjoy martins as much as I do you won't mind. It gets better as it moves along from start to ...

Lower numbers

I'm starting to think the same here at my location.
The amount of martins that are here now is considerably
lower than this time last year. I had 80 pair last season
but don't look to have that many yet this season.

Strange evening

My martins are really starting to pour in now. I've gone from 1 -3,6,8,12 and then up to 20 yesterday. After they went to roost and settled in for the night I came in the house. A couple hours later I heard our little dog out in the garage barking at something and throwing a fit at something out in ...

I guess I'm still here, after almost 20 years on this forum. I have
gained valuable information from a lot of fellow landlords.
Good luck everyone.

Increase in martins

Martins are starting to increase in number. Last night there were 3 that came
in to spend the night. This morning I have 6 flying around with cheerful song.
5 dark males and 1 female. Nightfall should be even better,as I think there will
be more show up. I hope everyone is having good returns.

It has a lot to do with the weather i'm sure, but they act a lot different seems to me this year. I just watched 2 dark males that were sitting on the perch of one of my castles. They were there long enough for me to scramble some eggs. When I went out to see if they would take any they took off to ...

This is how unpredictable they can be. Since I posted earlier, i'm setting in the front room looking out at the houses and there they are. Two black males going from house to house and the gourd rack looking. I believe they belong here but they are just not spending the night yet. I feel a little be...

It just seems different than it has in the past. Maybe it is best that there are not any here, as the temps are dropping down into the 40's tonight and we have had cold drizzle all day long. I hate to see them just sit on the houses looking like they are freezing. Good luck to all that have martins ...

Not looking good.

I'm starting to think this is not going to be good year at my colony. I had my first scout show up on the 8th stay 2 nights and not anymore. Yesterday there was 2 flying around for about 20 minutes, but they never landed and I've not seen them today. Something just don't seem right as normally after...

It is very strange. I'm still just seeing the one lone martin that showed
up on the 8th. He flies around over the housing for a while then leaves.
When he first came in he roosted here for 2 nights, but hasn't since. This
time last year I had 8 to 10 here. Hope everyone has a good year.

Tony, I haven't talked with him in a while so I don't know if he is still keeping up with his colony.  Do you have a colony? I'm beginning to think this is going to be a bad year for me, as the lone scout that showed up here is not staying. I only see him a couple times a day and then he...

Keith, Noticed this morning that you have an arrival. Great news!!!! It has been several years since I have been down in your neck of the woods. I love the scenery down there. I could adjust to living there quite easily. I used to go down and deer hunt with my brother in law on his property just sou...

Thanks everyone for the feedback. I have been hosting martins for over 20 years now, and as we know they can be very picky about their housing. Once they lay claim to one particular hole they will always return to it the next season. I have seen this male again today flying over the housing and he w...

My male martin has not showed up the past couple of days. I think he was just passing through. The weather is rainy here this morning but is supposed to clear off and warm
back up. In the meantime I'm trapping plenty of S&S.
