I don't mean playing games of chance

for money, but I do mean playing games of chance with mother nature, with our martins as 'chips'. Knowing we need to get a predator guard up, but putting it off week after week, hoping we'll slide through the season without any problems... I've done that at my old place in PA - never got around to installing a guard below the tree swallows' gourd. Got away with it, too, but it sure made me nervous. I didn't always win, though - I will never forget the year I went to check on nestbox with baby wrens and looked inside to see scales instead of feathers
So, if you too are a gambler, here's a reminder to get those pole guards on, it doesn't take that long. Buy them or make your own, but get something up under each nestbox or system.
Here's an article on the basics:

While you're at it, this is a very good time to inspect and replace any ropes, cables, or other equipment that is showing signs of wear & tear.
