Can someone post pictures of the homemade aluminum houses, please? I have access to lots of the vinyl coated aluminum (I just asked a local small vinyl siding company that uses it to wrap soffits and posts to make them weatherproof. They are glad I take their scraps)

Eddie,

My neighbor, Bob, has built a number of martin houses made from vinyl coated aluminum. Bob's houses have the "Trendsetter" design which he has used for many years, so it is not a new concept. Each floor has one compartment and the holes are staggered and the houses are four sided. Some of his houses have two floors and some have four. I will try to take some pictures of some of his houses if possible and post some. They are very popular with martins.

Thanks, Steve. I think that would be helpful to readers. The other thing that is helpful is to ask contractors for leftovers. There are many useful things I get from contractors and/or building sites. Better being used for our beloved purple martins than going to the landfill forever......

Eddie, another scrap material is PVC. I made a Castle using sections of 8-inch PVC pipe that I picked up from a contractor.

WOW, I like the Gollad also, I am temped to build on and stagger the entry holes putting them on the sides and not the ends making and L shaped cavity. IMO wouldn't be need for the porch dividers and the L shaped would be a built in Owl protection feature.

Hello Steve,
I was wondering if you can buy the Trendsetter house only and put it on the multi-purpose pole? Hoping it would work! Or maybe the Galaid houses too! Something worth checking! John!

Hey John,

You may be able to order a Trendsetter directly from the builder without a the regular pole. The Goliad can be ordered by itself I believe. The design of the Goliad may make it a little difficult to install on the multi-purpose pole. Plus the Goliad uses a pole that is inserted through the middle of the house. So, would have to work with that. Also, I am not sure if there would be enough room to attach the Goliad with its spread out design on the multi-purpose pole mounting bracket. I am a big fan of the multi-purpose pole concept and may even buy some more depending on how many martins return to my colony site this year. Bob and I are using four multi-purpose poles at his satellite colony sites this year.

Oh, I had five martins roost last evening: three ASY males and two females. Three were in the Goliad and and two in a funnel natural gourd.

Hello Steve,
Wow! You already got martins after your first year! Still waiting for mine from last year! Your probably right about the Goliad houses being too long and the pole that goes up in the middle! But that Trendsetter houses probably would fit, wouldn't they? That would be neat sitting on the Multi-purpose Pole! Thanks John!
