First martin of 2016!

We're on the map! A tad early, but not really - we have had other January arrivals, last year it was later, mid February.

John was outside working to add cane perches to systems when asy male flew overhead, vocalizing, about 5:45 pm. He returned for another flyover when I was outside :grin:

Hey Louise,

Thanks for sharing that great news with us on the Forum! I know you and John are excited and ready for the martin season to begin!

I haven't raised any of my houses/gourd racks but everything is ready to go. I will probably start raising systems in the next few days.

Congratulations on the arrival of your first martin for 2016!

Martin Colony History: 2017 Had a lot visitors no Matins nesting, hoping 2018 will be different.
2018 Had 1 pair
2019 had 30 pair

thanks - John gets the credit for having everything ready, not me! I add pine straw and sort out gourds - he's the man :wink:

I still have to clean gourds for my public site, so I better hustle!

Martin Colony History: Started in 1992 From neighbors old 1950-60's colonies. Have 8 Trio 6 Room Houses, 4 MPP Poles, 1 Heath Deluxe Gourd with Troyer Porch, 8 NatureLine Gourds with Troyer Porches, 5 Troyer Horizontals ,& 2 S&K 11" WITH Troyer Porches ready for 2019 Season !

Congratulations. Looking forward arrivals here in Pearland (just south of Houston) in a month or so. I'm ready, in case they're early.
2016 - 6 cavities in Royal Wing/S&K house + 6 BO9 gourds with tunnels/porches on pole 1, 6 BO9 gourds with tunnels/porches on pole 2
2015 - new homebuilt 3 cavity house plus 3 BO9 gourds with tunnels porches on second pole, in addition to prior setup. 15 pairs, 54 fledged
2014 - 6 6x12 house cavities (plastic Royal Wing/S&K), plus 6 BO9 gourds with tunnels/porches offered; 12 pairs, 50 fledged

Martin Colony History: 85 pair in 2020. Seems fairly consistent the last few years.

Great news Louise. The first one is always special. Always when my first arrival shows up and I retire for the night, I can't wait to see if he or she is still there the next morning. That must be a sign I'm too addicted to this hobby. Good luck.

Hi Louise ,great news you have got your martins back already seems a long way of before we see some birds up north here.lol don't think I can cope,was out doin yard work today and found myself looking up,why you ask "I know right,no chance of seeing any for at least 6 weeks lol
Hi kehunter just read your post ,i thought there was a scout report in sugar land already,if so your just east of there right,and was surprised you will not be seeing martins in the next week are your birds normally that late was just curious
