First martin at John Jay High School

....so I'm standing out in the parking lot after school helping with crowd control as 3,000 kids depart the premises on foot or by bus.

Started out warm this morning, near 70 F but a major cold front blew through today and it was windy and getting down into the 40's.

I look up and right there, over the parking lot comes our first martin, an ASY male 8) Gliding slowly in the chill wind, visibly fluffed out in that energy conserving manner they have.

Just back from Brazil 8) I know he wasn't here yesterday evening, I was out looking, Lord knows how far he had travelled today. He went down to the gourd racks behind the school, didn't see any heads out when I looked later. Smart bird, no doubt a veteran of many such weather events.

So, another season begins.....

Congratulations to you, Scully. I hope this the beginning of a great 2009 season.

Unfortunately the cold snap, accompanied by sleet and ice for many has presented some of the earliest arrivals with less than a WARM welcome. I sincerely hope this weather situation is short lived, and warmer temps will happen soon.

I wish you, your students, and your John Jay School site the very best of success this season.

Congrats Scully!!!!! I sure hope this season proves to be better than last season and we get RAIN!

We have more schools now watching purplemartin.tv so I hope everything goes well for your students and the students that are now getting involved around here. I couldn't believe how many kids did not know what a purple martin was, go figure, maybe because so many adults don't know either.

Congrats Scully!!!!! ,
I helped Tracy Hollis at South Grand Prairie HS last year I was her Mentor, she had tried for several years before i stepped in and never got any martins , i made a few changes, Location and added housing to her already gourd rack and we got martins for her finally and she fledged several babies ,all the School kid's & Tracy were very very happy and really looking forward to getting martins back again.

Martin Colony History: First started in Gretna, La in 1969 with a small homemade house, have had martins ever since at 2 different homes in Texas

I am happy that some students get to witness a martin colony at their school. We have a similar successful situation here at a Richmond school.

That is awesome! We are still trying here at LSC-CyFair. I hope this will be our year. We added some of Emil's entrances this year so hopefully I think this will be the year. I sort of want mine at home to wait a few more days before they come in. I just ordered a security cam so I can watch them while at work. I unfortunately get here at dark and get home when it is dark!

Congrats Scully, I guess mine will be along soon. They usually follow yours in. We changed all round holes to cresent. Sure hope no one is offended and will fly right in. I don't want to fight the starlings this year like I did last. Will let you know
