First one for 2014

Saturday, I cleaned all my Martin units and today I went out to cover the entrances until they started arriving. Just as I got the ladder set up, he came soaring over my head. I heard him first is what made me look up. He was more interested in the house than the gourds, so I raised it back up and h...

Way to go Gobbler T. I think most of us worried almost as much as you for all these years  I caught myself trying to check the forum, patiently waiting on a good report for you. Many times it was a hurried check just to see if you had posted anything. I know now (and have known for a long time...

Mine have just started hitting the oyster shells the last couple of days. They are much easier and they seem to like them better. I have been using them the last 3 years (counting this year). I put them on two raised platforms and my mocking birds and martins will sit together and share them.... :gr...

Harold, I had about the same thoughts. I had all my gourds down yesterday to finish getting ready for the season. (cleaning plus adding six more gourds). I left them down because I still had some more work to do and thought I would finish them the first of next week. I looked out the kitchen window ...

When I was a kid growing up, if one of our dogs had fleas, we would lay them on their back and dust them good with seven dust. It would not take but a few minutes until they were flealess....is that a word??? We would also go all around the house throwing seven dust up under the edge. (Houses ...

Coming in two at the time....

Well, I finally knocked the dust off the ol computer for the new Martin year and have been trying to catch up on everybody. It is good to see the old familiar folks  as well as the new ones. Welcome all. My first martins arrived earlier than I can ever remember. On the 12th of Feb. I had 3 bi...

Matt,
For years that is what we used seven dust for.....fleas.
We would cover the dogs, cats and then throw it around the bottom of the house as well as under it.
It would kill the fleas on the animals in just a few minutes.
Hope this helps.

Scott,
I can imagine. I have always thought I did not want any more than 25 to 50 birds max.
I don't know why but I think with more than that I would really stay confused (not mentioning the extra work and worries)

What constitutes a Super Colony.
I have heard it before but did not know what you had to have to be considered as one.

It looks like the season is over for this year

The numbers started dwindling down pretty fast following the fledging of this years crop. It got down to around 10 here about a week ago and yesterday it was down to 2 and today I saw 1 very briefly. This is the earliest ever. Last year was the latest ever so I guess it evens out...lol. Had a good y...

You cannot leave them on the ground here in south ga.
The fire ants will kill them in less than an hour...
Anywhere but the ground and they may have a chance....but none at all if they are left on the ground.
