with over 40 pair of martins this year i am capacity filled. After the storm i did a nest check the next morning and found a cap blown off of one of the gourds. After checking in on them, there were still 4 healthy babies inside. The cap was replace and i hope for a complete survival from this group !! The two racks i was able to check are healthy and everything appears to be going well. I suspect another 15 pair in a rack that is jammed and i cannot lower, just observing the activity. I received approval to place two more racks next year that will get me to a SUPER COLONY status within the next two years.

What constitutes a Super Colony.
I have heard it before but did not know what you had to have to be considered as one.
Thanks,

A " Super Colony" is a colony of at least 100 pairs or more of Martin's. It can also be called a.... Pain in the **** Colony whichever, you prefer. Just kidding, sort of.

Scott,
I can imagine. I have always thought I did not want any more than 25 to 50 birds max.
I don't know why but I think with more than that I would really stay confused (not mentioning the extra work and worries)

A twist I like on the super colony idea— a mentor in NJ works with as many area landlords as he can. These are, to start with, often not well managed, or small colonies. He helps each landlord do more to manage their site, control HOSP, makes sure they use pole and owl guards. Their goal is to fledge 100 nestlings (or more) per season. That usually requires about 20-25 pairs. I think that's a great idea, working to help small colonies fledge more young. Better all around, for the martins and the landlords involved.

Perfect, Mrs Freeze - great minds (yours and Allen Jackson's) think alike! I like the concept very much. And we all know landlords who do both, build up their own sites, build up area sites by helping landlords, and more - like working with area newspapers, businesses, sending emails to their group of landlords.
