Re: New to the Forum/Startup colony

Welcome to the forum! I am not too far away from you (Ville Platte). you shouldn't have any trouble attracting martins since they are so plentiful in Louisiana, however, since it is a new setup, you may not get any until sub-adults start coming in later, probably around April. Just be patient, and m...

I have a pair that came in today. They kept going in and out of one of my gourds. I am not sure if they stayed overnight. I'll check to see if still around tomorrow. Last year, my first pair did not arrive until the 8th of February.

I think it depends on what stage they are at. When they first arrive, they can be seen in morning hours and just before sunset. Now that mine are nesting, they hang around most of the day.

I have a gourd camera in one of my gourds and I had 5 in one gourd last night also!! I think they do this to keep warm. Hopefully they will be able to go out and eat today.

They're Back!

My martins came back yesterday!! When I came home from work, there were two males and a female perched on the house. This morning I counted fourteen of them, and this evening there were at least six that entered the housing for the night. I am so excited to have them back, however, a storm came in l...

re: house placement

Sam,

My setup is 19 ft. away from my home and I currenty have 3 pair and 3 singles staying. They don't seem to mind being close at all.

Thank you all for your responses.

I am determined to rid myself of these pests one way or another!! I hope to either trap them or, if I can get a good shot, I will shoot them with my pellet gun.

Newbie

Hi, I am brand new to being a purple martin landlord. I have always been interested in purple martins. My wife bought me a coates 12 apt house for Christmas, which I modified to a six two-room suite house. I also have two super gourds hanging underneath. I have had my house open for about six weeks ...
