Excellent job, roosts are quite amazing. We live 50 miles north of Omaha where there was a roost in 2010 right in town that we got some film clips too.

Omaha Roost clip

Louise informed us that the Omaha, Ne roost had started on July 31, we were only 50 miles from Omaha and had missed last years display and we now thought we had also missed this years event. Well, we drove down to Omaha last Sunday on Aug 15th, and we were so totally blown away with what we witnesse...

Nice story. Well, our gal managed to fledge all four of her brood on August 11th. Her nest was about 2 weeks behind the rest and she was the last. Some of the others had been hanging around waiting for her, as soon as her babies could fly, they all left. So quiet now, constantly looking at empty rac...

Thanks for input. Was grossly mistaken, dead parent was re-identified as male subbie, female doing a good job of raising the kids. As far as, males' death, not the usual entrapment senario we have experienced in the past. Usually the bird is trapped with the wing on the outside and can't go forward ...

Will babies survive with one parent?

Have a nest with four 12-16 day olds, mom dead from entrapment. only one parent left. Will the other parent take up the slack and will they be okay. Can you feed babies that age crickets? Only have 2 unfledged units left, the other one will fledge next week. Most everyone else gone. Any advice or le...

Sevin dust update

Want to thank all of you who have advised the use of sevin dust. Had horrible experiences the past three years with mites. Lost some babies, had to make numerous nest changes, disinfected gourds to start over with new materials, all while the birds were circling above. Special thanks to Birdie Girl,...

How sad. I read somewhere in the Forum once, that you could possibly take orphaned babies and place in other nests where the parents were feeding and they would sort of adopt them. Anyone else hear of this? It could be helpful for Cheryl. By the way, I've got a cute little mini-video of some babies ...

First Babies of 2010

Our first babies arrived today, 6/12. First egg laid 5/24, according to Martinwatch XLS, they should have begun hatching on 6/7. Is it common that they miss the anticipated hatch date? Oh Well, we are as happy as can be anytime they arrive. We now have 23 nests in our 24 gourds, 110 eggs, and 4 kidd...

We are egg-cited!

Well, after a late start and a lot of cool weather, nearly killing our first group, we finally got started. We have 24 Bo Eleven Plus gourds this year, and 22 have nested, we counted 68 eggs today, some have just started their clutches. Hope we don't have mite problems as in the past 3 years, really...
