Good for you! They're still not in E carolina or New Bern as far as I can tell. I drive 700 miles a week, taking the side roads often, and I haven't seen any Martins at any of the large colony sites?
Hopefully soon!

Martin Colony History: I moved to South Florida, from Delaware, in August of 2015.

I care for a 6 condo Sunset House as well as two Deluxe Gourd Racks, with 24 Chirpynest/Excluder gourds, along a canal in Pompano Beach, Florida.

At Quiet Waters Park, nearby in Deerfield Beach, I care for a Deluxe Gourd Rack with 12 TVG's. I also care for a Deluxe Gourd rack with 12 Excluder gourds with Modified Excluder entrances. I am substituting 6 Chirpynest boxes for 6 of the Conley II entranced gourds in 2026.

At another local park, Tradewinds Park in Coconut Creek, I care for a Trendsetter 12, 5 gourds rack with 60 Excluder gourds with Modified Excluder Entrances and 1 Deluxe Gourd Rack with 12 Troyer Vertical Gourds with Starling Stoppers over the Conley II's to keep out smaller starlings.

How far west into NC are purple martins commonly found? Ashville? Charlotte?

Carl..at one time it was common to see martins here as far as the Appalachians. I remember seeing several colonies near Boone in the 70's. Gene is up there just as far west as you can go.

corner of North Carolina close to the Tennessee border. Not sure if there are any landlords in Boone area or not due to the more rugged terrain..

The Foxfire Books featured a story of purple martins in Appalachia. It was one of the "bugs" that got me hooked on martins. I visited sites in Deep Gap and Valley Cruis when I did surveying in the Boone area. It was believed that having a colony of martins would keep the "chicken hawks" away.

I walked out on my deck to bathe in the beautiful sunshine day here in SC and that unmistakable chirping drew my attention upwards. Sure enough, an adult male PM was happily flying around and checking out the housing. I still have 12 more houses to put up so gotta get busy. Happy day!
