I went out to cut the porches off of 8 gourds a few minutes ago and there sat a beautiful ASY male on one of the porchs just singing his heart out. He has since moved to a perch bar above the pastels gourds and is still singing.
I'll have to let the porches stay until I see what he is going to do. He also checked out the old slum house. I walked relatively close to him calling out "Boss Man" . This was the name of my ASY male from last year. He did not flush and was not the least bit afraid,maybe its him.
20 minutes later now I got 2 ASY males

One of them has checked out the old house,a pastel blue gourd,a pastel yellow gourd and a porched white gourd twice. He hasn't entered any but is certainly interested it looks like.

2011 A pair of subbies fledged three young but none returned in 2012
2015 One Pair of subbies came and stayed a few nits but got chased away by Bluebirds and Tree swallows.
2017 0ne pair of subbies nested and fledged 4 young
2018 Tree Swallows AGAIN chased away any martins that wanted to nest
2019 Same old story................

I am really happy for you! Nice thing about it is, it appears you did not have to wait three or four more weeks for the SY's to show up. I bet you have your male back from last year and with all the "home improvements", you should really pick up those birds looking for a site in your area. Best of luck for the season.

As Emil was stating, you need to check their nametags because I believe when my two males went out to feed early this morning, they dropped by your place to see the funny colored colony you have....

Dick, instead of cutting off the porch, why not leave it there until the martins decide to stay and build a nest? At that time you could add a 1/2in board or piece of plywod on top of the porch to make it nearly a flush mount which would keep out the starlings. I would much rather see you do that, as it may help you get a lot of martins this year.

Well those porches are already history Emil I went out and cut them off after they left. I hope they left to feed but I will be realistic and not hope for to much from an ASY at a new site but hoping one of them was the one from last year and he comes back in to roost tonight. I hope he is out feeding and brings a female back with him.. I'll be watchiing closely from my bedroom window late this afternoon.

- Martin Colony History: Taking care of 11 active public colonies and trying to start two more in northwestern PA. Also attempting to restart another one in southwestern PA, in Collier Township's Hilltop Park. In 2017, not sure what happened but the ASY male returned and then a couple of weeks later he was gone. It could have been weather related. No other birds showed up. I had a starling nesting at the Public site that I had trouble getting rid of.
In 2018, we fledged 629 martins at all of the sites.
Dick, this is great news. Everyone is happy for you! With all of those pastel gourds, you may be setting a trend for the future of Purple Martins. Wish you all of the luck with these birds. Now, you should be able to change your profile !!!!! Still interested, but a second year landlord.
