Martin Colony History: 3000+SUC. PAIRS; 13,500+ FLEDGLINGS IN 25 YEARS. Attempting colony reduction, 77 cavities, Troyer gourds.

So far, with 7 to go... :)

297 successful nests with 2 to go....... :)

A total of 1645 eggs were laid and 1501 hatched.... :) :)

Martin Colony History: First started in Gretna, La in 1969 with a small homemade house, have had martins ever since at 2 different homes in Texas

Only one word can describe that....... FABULOUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Martin Colony History: Erected 1st house in 1997. Birds were checking it out before Mike got down from the ladder. Six cavities had a little colony 1st year. Grown to 88 cavities all gourds with near 100% occupancy. Most important factor for success is rain = bugs.

What more can I say that hasent already been said? Still , great job! Is this years total more or less than last year?
PMCA member and Martin fanatic....
2011 A pair of subbies fledged three young but none returned in 2012 :-(
2015 One Pair of subbies came and stayed a few nits but got chased away by Bluebirds and Tree swallows. :-(
2017 0ne pair of subbies nested and fledged 4 young
2018 Tree Swallows AGAIN chased away any martins that wanted to nest :evil:
2019 Same old story................ :-(

Tony, I also would like to say CONGRATULATIONS on another successful year. I admire you, not only for the number of nesting sites you provide but also for the excellent record-keeping of each nest.

I think that was worth repeating three (3) times! Thank you!

I am always trying to get a punch in for nestchecks and recordkeeping. Tony does a fantastic job. You don't have to write everything down if you just have two pair nesting this season - but, when you get five or six or twenty, then it's time...

Besides, it's fun!!

Thanks Linsue and Laverne.. Record keeping is time consuming but an absolute must in this game. And the easier you can make it for yourself the better. :) The last 2 nests fledged yesterday and today ; all 7 fledglings made it-- 8) Number 1019, a Goliad double 12" compartment with creob, was the last out . The ASY veteran pair had already fledged 5 from there on the 30th of May, then did a 2nd brood. They did this last year as well, fledging two broods (5+4=9). Only one double brood this year, and a total of 6 successful double broods in '04. :wink: :eek: Glad we get a break for 5 1/2 months. :roll: Guess I'll get busy and work on the rigs and welcome the thundering herd back in late January--- EXCITING :!: :wink: Friend In Texas :grin:

:lol: thundering herd :lol: :lol: I love that!!

I guess your location at the southern edge of the breeding range allows for double broods by some pairs. I've heard somebody in Florida report double broods before, too. I had one gourd that was used twice this season, but not by the same pair.
