Hi Randy! If they are 27 days old, they should be able to fly just fine...
...... Most of my babies fledged at that age. You'll be surprised at how well they will do! Some of mine just went right out the hole into the air, and some of them came out on the porch, and flapped their wings for a little bit and then took off. Just try to keep an eye on them, although sometimes it's hard in telling them from the adults....LOL.... Another thing, some of mine fledged early (6:00 AM) in the morning, and some late (6:30 PM) in the afternoon. You just never know when they decide to take that leap of faith...
.... We have 4 dogs, and they have never paid any attention to the PM's, except when they get dive bombed...LOL...I think your dogs should be fine. Good luck to you, and let us know when the big day comes....
..... Pat

- Martin Colony History: Erected 1st house in 1997. Birds were checking it out before Mike got down from the ladder. Six cavities had a little colony 1st year. Grown to 88 cavities all gourds with near 100% occupancy. Most important factor for success is rain = bugs.
Awwww, Randy...
You describe a "picture perfect" fledging. I'm so happy for you and your founding SY pair. Great job by all!!!
Best wishes to you for many successful Purple Martin seasons in the future!
