Are they staying later this year?
I live in Katy, TX and it seems the martins are gone by around the 4th of July but I still have quite a few, but I don't think I have any babies left. They came later so do they stay later or is it the storms keeping them home? I am new at this so would appreciate any advice. Thanks!

- Martin Colony History: Erected 1st house in 1997. Birds were checking it out before Mike got down from the ladder. Six cavities had a little colony 1st year. Grown to 88 cavities all gourds with near 100% occupancy. Most important factor for success is rain = bugs.
Yes, Katylady.
There seem to be more Purple Martins staying later this season in our part of the breeding range.
I, too, had 3 late nests that have fledged in the last week.
This has been a weird season...
Enjoy them - they will soon be gone.

YES, YES, I have noticed this too. This year they are staying later and roosting around the colony. My last fledged more than 2 weeks ago. In the morning between 7-9 I get over 25 roosting on the perches.
I'm a "nestcamaholic" Is 18 hours a day a bad thing? (I have 2 this year, luckily I have 2 eyes!)

I am not to sure if they are staying later at my place. I have anywhere from 15 to 25 birds here now. I have 3 nest with babies due to fledge now, so I think when these babes fledge mine will leave. I think most of them have the itch to leave already. I had 22 pairs this year with many babies and I think most of them are gone already. In my previous 2 years I am lucky to see any around by Aug 1rst.
