Hello all,
I'm looking for some feedback.
I know it's still early in the season.
So far, have counted 22 martins at my site. I took down a coconut tree last summer to make our backyard even more open and make the martins more comfortable.
I have 18 supergourds and am hoping to fill them all this season, so am looking for quite a few more birds. My first birds arrived little bit on the late side (1/26) this year.
I am in South Florida

Are you seeing a lower number of martins at this point in the season?

Thanks!
Have a great season!

Hey Stingray,
I’m quite a bit north of you. Mine were 10 days later this year, Feb 15. But have since made up for lost time and I’m ahead of where I was last year at this point..

March has always been the biggest influx of ASY’s here, with the subbies starting to arrive beginning of April. Hard to count but I’m guessing I’m in the high 50’s low 60’s for numbers right now.

I added another rack this year with 18 Troyer Horizontals and so far 2 pair and a single male in there.. Had more adults show up today so they’re still coming.

Hope a bunch more show up for you!

Hi Phil01,
Your situation sounds great!
Glad to hear about your numbers and your expansion!
Sounds like you have a nice size colony. 👍
I have a 12 and a 6 gourd rack and hope to see them all filled up this season.
Thanks for your reply.
Much appreciated.

Enjoy!
Have a great season!

Hi Stingray! I'm in southwest florida and has first martins show up on February 17th. Have 2 "regular" pairs nesting, and several fly overs.
5 eggs in one next on April 16th. We had bigger numbers last year but I'm new and not so good at keeping records. Hopefully the 2 pairs will successfully raise their young. trying to control the House Sparrows and feel like I'm losing the battle.........but so far they don't seem to be bothering the Martins.

Hi onalaska,
Since you're new, welcome to the fold!
2 pairs nesting beats one pair!
You’ve gotta start somewhere :).
Like you, I'm not as diligent with record keeping as many folks here. Some keep their records below their site's signature. I think it's a great idea! Maybe one day I'll get the gumption to do the same!
House Sparrows are persistant.
Do you have crescent entrances?

Hope you beat last year's numbers!

Regards,
Have a great season!

Hi Dave and thanks!
Yes, mine were a bit late this year, but I'm feeling better now.
We dropped both gourds today and out of 18, I have 14 nests and 30 eggs. Two of the empty gourds each had a dead martin in them. I put some pine straw in them and hopefully will attract some late arriving subadults.
I'm looking forward to a good season and hope yours is a great one! 👍
Have a great season!
