Asking Advice

Join the site a few days ago. Never have had anything to do with purple Martin housing. I have built what I’m hoping will be a new home for purple martins. These houses are 8”x12”x6” high in compartment size. Eight in each house, the houses are 14’ high at the top of the house from the ground and are on a metal pole capable of lowering. Any suggestions to the project in progress. Just a note I put it up late last summer and had many purple martins stop and look in. Hope that means something good. I have attempted to add some photos hope they load.

Nice houses. I'd suggest you put a predator / snake net on that pole though. If you have had visitors before, I'm pretty sure they will show up again. Season is in full swing, but it would still be beneficial to play dawn song early in the morning. Look for dawn song players right here on this site on PMCA's shopping section.

I will put the predator guard on for sure. I live far north of having a snake problem we have no squirrels and no raccoons “yet”. But you never know what might show up.

Looks good. Always amazes me that martins nest in Canada.

I would like to see a closer view of the porches. It's important martins be able to comfortably use a porch to enter.

Wish I could be more definitive, but I'm a little concerned with the vertical beams at each side of the porch whether a martin can comfortably land on the porch. If this were an established colony, martins would adjust. Certainly the vertical beams are similar to owl guards. Perhaps others can chime in.

They are very easy to remove, maybe I should do that until at least I get a pair nesting. Owls are my concern and the reason I installed those guards.
