Question About the DGR Winch Upgrade for 3" Poles

The DGR 3 inchers have a height restriction of "not to exceed 16 feet." The winch extension adds an extra foot making it 17 feet. Am I supposed to trim the length of the extension off of the original pole to accommodate this engineering guideline? Or is this pole safe to operate at 17 feet? All comments welcome.
