Great article! I’m a 6th year landlord and when you start you’re really not ready for what’s to come. The bond with these beautiful birds is magical. Most people just don’t understand and that’s ok. And, it goes beyond bonding with the martins. It’s created for me a greater appreciation for nature and our wildlife. I am saddened and concerned to see the decline of the Purple Martins in Louisiana as shown in the illustration. What are the factors contributing to the decline? I just saw a biography on Rachel Carson who wrote “Silent Spring”. I wonder, just wonder, what’s in the future for these magnificent birds and all natural wildlife. Thank you for sharing. Great article!

Glad you liked the ar-tickle. I also think and daydream about how to best support our tradition of hosting purple martins. I don't know the answer. Hosting field day events at public colonies I manage always seems to help. I backed off during the pandemic, and got out of practice this season, but hope to resume one or two next year. I also read that our PMCA is developing an instructional program to offer to schools to introduce kids to purple martins -- that sounds promising , and perhaps one in which members could participate.

John,
Thank you for posting this. So interesting and informative. I really enjoyed reading about our beautiful birds although I too am saddened to hear they are declining

Yes, thank you for posting!
There were a number of good articles on that site.
They identified how difficult it is to identify Coopers and sharp shin hawks when they fly through your colony.
