I have been trying to trap a clever HOSP for 3 or 4 days now using the Haskel trap which I have found to be very effective on both HOSP's and Starlings. I finally got him today, but sadly that's not the end of the story., and I hate to admit this, but he got away from me while I was transferring him out of the gourd.
My question now is will he return to that gourd or will the scare that put in him discourage him. There are currently 2 eggs in the nest. Any advice on what would be the best course of action?
Thanks;
Hanover Bill.

Hi bill.. same exact thing happened to me once.. I didn’t see that sparrow again for several days… it scared the snot out of him (temporarily) … we know how easily spooked and alert they are.. but he couldn’t help himself and he eventually came back. That was his last mistake. I shot him and gave the neighborhood cats a treat that night..
He might stay away.. but keep an eye out!!!
Good luck,
Rob

Bill,
Its a bad felling, but happens. Had one hit me in the cheek as it escaped a nest box trap, little sucker.
He may very well come back, when he does whammo.

A good house sparrow is a dead house sparrow.

My experience with male house sparrows that narrowly escape my grasp is that they do not return. The trauma of almost being grabbed seems to be enough to send them off to less dangerous pastures.

I hate house sparrows...is that wrong? I constantly see them hanging out at the Hilton's I stay at...at lowes....at walmart...at the Kroger grocery store...I see red when I see one here and go for a gun or rock immediately....I can't see any goodness in them but I guess nature has a place for them I must be wrong....as an evolutionist I'm certain they are adaptable, durable and prolific...I don't care for their persistence, elusiveness, and determination either. Keep it up Bill
