Hi everyone,
Last fall I put in a patio sliding door which is somewhat wide and tall. The reflective nature of most windows causes birds to mistake the window as a reflection of the what is outside, therefore birds will sometimes injure themselves by crashing into the window. I did some research and found the best and most permanent solution is installing a window film product from collidescape.org. I purchased the white color option. It allows you to see out, but appears soild without reflection to the birds. I'm waiting for the order to arrive. Temporarily I places shiny stripes of ribbon 4 inches apart and duct taped them from top to bottom as a grid to stop the birds from crashing into the patio doors. The collidescape.org states that it is 100 % guaranteed to stop the birds and easy to install.

- Martin Colony History: 24 Super and Excluder Gourds on two gourd racks, all SREH. Full occupancy. My philosophy is to maximize fledge % with existing cavities rather than adding gourds to grow colony, thus providing opportunities for new colony expansion. Fledge over 100 nestlings yearly from 24 gourds. Band nestlings in cooperation with state university. 2019 Adendum: Reduced colony size to 12 gourds to focus on more intensive management regimen.
Good suggestion for anyone with birds in the yard..
With many trees reflecting in the windows of our house, we have birds hitting the windows all year. I have used Save-the-Birds window decals for many years with some success. They are not 100% effective from my experience but they help. The number of bird impacts has been decreased quite a bit but does occur from time to time. The decals are in various shapes and roughly 4 x 4 inches in size. The UV tinted decals are visible to the birds from outside and barely visible from the inside. They adhere to the outside of the window.
I get mine from Duncraft but google it and there may be other sources or other options.
Do nest replacements. Produce as many fledglings as possible.
