Iowa martin population increase 2021.

I have been receiving multiple reports of huge increases in the numbers of martins so far this season; espeacially SY martins. I'm assuming other midwest states are experiencing the same. I think the great success last year is producing the huge numbers this year. Best of luck everyone.

Hi Dave,
Of those that have established colonies the numbers are up. But, for those still waiting to start a colony, I'm hoping that there will be more action. Even if a person doesn't see a successful start this year, my hope is that on their migration south, the new babies will take note for their return next year of available housing. I wish you the best for this season.

After 3 years of trying, I have 2 pair of SY martins actively nest building. I also have seen an unaccompanied 5th martin, 2Y male looking in empty gourds. There is an active colony on the opposite corner of town that I drive by every year and this year is the most martins I have ever seen at his place in 4 years.

Hi Dave.. I lost martins to a 7 day friek freeze here in se Louisiana this year. I never had a need to supplement my 21 year colony due to mild early springs here. But this year I had to supplement feed because of a lengthy freeze. . I tried tossing crickets for 6 days, but none would accept them. Also tried raised platter with crickets. Any tips on how I can train them? Dragon flies are always everywhere this time of year, so no chance to try in summer. They’re never short of food except for rare tropical storms. But would love to train in case of emergencies. Any tips on how, would be appreciated..

Hi Rob,
Some landlords have better success trying scramble eggs bits first and place them right on the porch. Remeber not to use oil when scrambling eggs and don't use scrambled eggs for extended times, due to the fact it can cause runny stools. If you google in supplement feeding, there will probably be more in depth info. There is also a section on the PMCA website that focused on supplement feeding. I wish you the best my friend,
