Martin Colony History: Will add later

Today is ... “the most wonderful day of the year!”

As of 10:18 a.m., April 24, 2020, the Purple Martins arrived “home” in Larimore, ND

I saw at least five ASY males and a couple ASY females, even more zoomed in right at dark.

I was outside when I heard that unmistakable call. There is nothing else like it in the world!

I saw several more circling high overhead and heard even more.

Since April 14 I’ve had the gourds prepped and lowered with duct tape over the entries to keep out the house sparrows!

I zipped off the tape barriers and raised the rack to the top of the pole in less than a minute. The birds were zooming into the cavities before I had it completely raised.

One male buzzed my head and gave me his most threatening posture. I tried to look reasonably cowed as I was laughing with glee.

My birds are back!

... Carline94535-ND ... So happy for ya... It always feels good when the kids come in at night, safe and sound... I had the same story to tell everyone about my site last evening.. I had all the holes plugged to keep the Sparrows and Bluebirds out... The male showed up first, then the female showed up an hour or so later.... I ran out as fast as I could, lowered the rack, removed the plugs and raised it back up in two minutes. At 7:55pm they both went into the same gourd that they nested in last year... The excitement is overwhelming .. I know how you feel..   Hope you have a great season...
