Unpaired ASY Males

I have a bout 8 to 10 pairs now it seems however, I also have about 3 or 4 unpaired ASY males working hard every day to fill their cavity with a mate. Have any of you ever had any unpaired ASY males throughout an entire season? I'm guessing more and more SY females will be working into the area over the next couple of weeks so they may pair up but the thought occurred to me that they may not.

I counted 25 martins circling prior to roosting last night. 2 of which did not stay the night. Hard to keep track of who went where as they hit the gourds at dusk. I do see the ASY males today working their gourds hard while others are popping in and out theirs holding on to their real estate.

Last night I witnessed two ASY males flying around with a leaf enticing females in. They would get to the gourd sit for a minute then fly off with the leaf again. They would eventually drop the leaf off the porch.

Anyways. Curious to hear your thoughts and experience with unpaired ASY males.

I've never had unpaired ASY males. I would assume that SY females would be happy to snatch them up. I am not sure though how far along the SY migration is in your area. The ones in my area haven't even started arriving yet.

2017 ASY male returned chased off by starlings

2019 3 Pair with nestlings and an ASY male bachelor and 2 SY males around all the time fledged 16

I had one unpaired ASY male last year. He left for a week a couple times but would always come back and wound up building a complete nest and all in one of my gourds. I am in central Michigan and we don’t have many martins. There are 4 local colonies counting mine that I know of and we each only get 1-4 pair. It always seems we need more females. The last two years I have had 3-4 SY males that hang around most of the summer and don’t fine females also.
