Martin Colony History: 2017 first year

Just put up my original rack from last year and added a similar set up 20 feet away thus doubling my available cavities. Last year my first time trying we were very lucky and had good occupancy and fledging.
They don’t usually arrive until late March early April here but since I see that they seem to be arriving early I put up both rigs and are keeping closed until I see the first arrivals
Very excited and anxious!

Martin Colony History: The 1972 St. Agnes flood wiped out all the Martins in my area. One day, in 1997-98, 5 or 6 Martins landed on the power wires crossing my back yard. I had no house for them. They kept coming back day after day. We got a martin house a few weeks later & they have been coming back every year since. I average 12-15 pair per year.

Congrats on getting started last season. Watch the Scout Report Map & when they get closer to your area open a few rooms you can see from your house. As more arrive open more rooms. It helps to keep the HS & Starlings from moving in. Trap & shoot them if you can.

My area was spared from the Nor'easter, but I have had them arrive & then get a couple inches of snow. Supplemental feeding & hand warmers kept them going for 2 weeks until the weather warmed up.

Hope you have a great season.

Had our first arrival on Friday 3/31 of course we went on vacation the next day for a week so couldn’t observe/track progress local weather wasn’t the best all week but not as bad as others
Home now we have at least 3. Two ASy males and one female. They seem to be comfortable so I assume they were residents from last year.
Hope others are in their way!

Question about added new 2 nd rig close to original
Do the ASY view the new rack something new or just an extension of the original set up? Reason I ask is there seems to be a lot of interest in the new set up as much as if not more than the original.
It is pretty close to original probably about 30 ft.
Have 5-6 at least now!

Phil I think they are curious and like little kids in a candy store! Mine are jumping around every night to a different gourd! They just can’t seem to make up their mind! It’s a lot of fun to watch! Good luck this season! :)
