Happy Holidays All,
I am preparing for the upcoming season and want to install owl guards on gourds. I have found that #9 galvanized wire works well by simply sliding the wire tightly through holes drilled in the gourd. Is there a specific distance from the gourd that the wires/rods should be placed and how far apart should they be?

- Martin Colony History: Started with 2 pair in 2014 - 7 eggs -7 fledged
I have the ends of my own guards about 9 inches in front of the entrance and spaced 7 inches apart with the tips of the ends almost level with the bottom of the entrance. The martins have accepted these distances very quickly and do not appear to have a problem navigating around them. I installed a crossbar of 1/2 inch wooden dowel on the prongs right above the entrance and they use the crossbar as perches.

I used H-Stands for realtor signs on my S&K Bo9s. Since this photo I have added tunnels to all the gourds. Martins seam to love the modifications.

Thanks for the information. It looks like I'm on the right track. I just don't want to mistakenly make it easier for the owls.
