The Purple Martins are north, east, and west of me, but Grand Forks, ND remains a Purple Martin free zone so far this year! I have checked all the sites that I monitor and all of them all empty.
This afternoon there was a Northern Mockingbird serenading me all afternoon. The only sounds even similar to the Purple Martin were unfortunately made by the mockingbird.
Do we have others who are still waiting for their arrivals?

I have checked a few established colonies I know of in north central SD and have seen zero martins at two of those sites and only 3 ASY birds at another one within the past few days during an early morning drive-by. I have a large spread of gourds and houses at a lake-side site where I am trying to get a colony started. In years' past I typically have had at least a few ASY birds stop by my place for a short visit by this date, but have not seen a martin at my site yet this year. I have been playing the dawn song and chatter CD every day since mid-April this year to no avail. I had a SY male stay at my place for the month of June last year, but he did not attract a female, so I'm hopeful of his overwinter survival and his return to my site in full ASY plumage this spring to hopefully help to get my colony started. I had about 2 dozen young of the year spend a few days at my site late last August, so I hope they remember their way back and that it's a big push of SY birds on their way northward, because it appears the ASY count is down considerably for this part of the country this year.

I have a strong feeling that the martin numbers may be down this season. Typically I have around 125-130 adult martins this time of year. I have around 35-40 currently.

Last evening I also saw a pair ASY Martins at each of the two sites about 20 miles south of my place that were previously martin-less so far this season. It's good to see there a still some ASY birds migrating from southern reaches. Still pretty quite at my site...I hope last year's young of the year that stopped by my place last fall return in the coming weeks with thoughts of colonizing my empty site!
