Martin Colony History: Started trying to attract purple martins in 2012! It's finally happened in 2017! 5 years!!! ASY male and SY female came May 1st, fledged 5 babies!

At 7:45 a.m. I looked out and they were back. They just sit on the power line and preened and I call it picking on one another. They walk side ways on the power line towards one another and bother the one next to them. Sometimes they even make them fly then they circle and come right back. All the pictures on photo bucket are my whole year of martin activity. Each year gets better and better!!! :)

Sharon,it's been a tough year for a lot of small colonys for some reason, hopefully next year will be your year.

Martin Colony History: Taking care of 11 active public colonies and trying to start two more in northwestern PA. Also attempting to restart another one in southwestern PA, in Collier Township's Hilltop Park. In 2017, not sure what happened but the ASY male returned and then a couple of weeks later he was gone. It could have been weather related. No other birds showed up. I had a starling nesting at the Public site that I had trouble getting rid of.
In 2018, we fledged 629 martins at all of the sites.

It sure is nice to see you wrapping up this martin year with some very positive signs for next year. Wish you all the luck in 2015 to get that colony started.

Ed,

Kudos to you for hanging in there for all of those years. Finally it seems that you have a good start to grow your colony in the years to come. Make sure if you some crickets on hand next spring in case of some cold weather. You sure don't want to lose any of those birds after waiting that long of a time.
