Today we finally have some martins at our box. It started with just one sitting on the perch and singing for about an hour before it left. When it came back there were another 5 with it and now they are flying around and looking in the gourd holes. Can I get my hopes up that we may be getting a colony startes?

I've heard that when it gets close to time to migrate (now in our area), the martins take all their young and friends around to look at available housing for next year. This seems like a good sign that you may have some serious tenant prospects for next year.

Keep you house clear of sparrows etc. and hopefully next year will be a great year for you!!

It's unlikely you'd have Martins start nesting this late in the year, but they certainly are writing your place down in their log book for next year!
