I went looking for the roost last night and found they are once again using trees adjacent to the hotel's parking garage and other trees that are nearby. I stayed until it was almost dark and there were still thousands of martins whirling in the air overhead. I don't know how all of them could fit into the trees at the Doubletree. My guess is that there were between 50,000 and 100,000 martins.
There have been a fair number of large trees removed from the surrounding neighborhood since last year. These had been used as roost trees in past years, mostly for overflow birds as the roost reaches its peak in late July into August.
The Tulsa Audubon Society has roost watch events planned for Saturday, Aug. 9th and on Aug. 23rd. People can check their website for more information as the dates get closer.
There should be large numbers of martins at the roost from now until late August, as long as they aren't disturbed, so I hope many people will come and see this amazing spectacle.

2017 - Home & Public Colonies - 300 Cavities
It is an amazing sight. Seems a bit early. My birds are pretty much done here (about 20 miles north of Tulsa). I have about 20 birds or so hanging around still. I expect them to leave soon. I'll be going back downtown to see the birds again.
