when preparing for a new season is it best to put nesting material in the cavity or leave it bare? I've seen one Martin and he was only on the house for 2-3 seconds and he was gone! Any clues as to why?

2016 - Dagnabbit - Still a lonely wannabe landlord. :-(
2015 - Still no martins
2014 - No luck yet... Not seeing many martins in the area.
2013 - First year trying. I've done everything to attract PM's except giving them free airfare to get here. Maybe I'll do that too !!!

I am a believer in pre-nesting.... Any way you can help your Martins along is good...

I agree with JL...and as to your Martin coming and going, could be he wasn't comfortable with your site ( trees, buildings, etc) or was just passing through..good luck!

We have had great luck in providing pre-nesting material (in our area - pine straw). We cut it up to make a "softer" nesting material. In a few situations the "birds" did remove all of our "material" and start from scratch....Who know's???

I say attempt to give them a really good start!

We pre-nested our gourds with pine needles. They apparently liked the help. Our pair started taking pine needles from the empty gourds to add to their nests. I also played the Chatter and Dawn Songs "loud".
