Today is a good day. The condo is almost full. There isnt even any buds on the trees yet. But the martins have been arriving strong in the last week. So by this weekend there should be no vacancy! Yeah!

That is great to hear. If the weather is still not in the 50's I hope they can find something to eat.
I'm in eastern Pennsylvania and I saw my first martin April 1st. It was still cold. Today I believe I have two new martins and I believe they are SY males, I have to get a better picture. Right now it looks like I have 5 pair and maybe 6 not including the SY males.
2013-4 gourds 4 pair

2015-24 gourds 21 nesting pair 79 fledged

Hi David
I'm glad to see that finally there is some action up north. i get jealous hearing that eggs are laid & there houses are full. We have a cottage on the southern tip of Lake Huron which i put up a house two years ago. First year nothing (went up too late in the season). Last year 4 pair, this winter I modified it and put it back up. (knowing full well not to meddle with it) Last weekend went up to get rid of any sparrows but was in awe with what looked like every unit of the 18 unit was occupied with Martins! Mostly males but martins non the less! No sparrows what so ever..
I'm still trying to get Martins at home but no luck and haven't seen one yet. I'm starting to think i may never get them here. The only spot I found in London that has an established site is a golf course on the other side of the City (East Park)
My house backs onto the river and plenty of open space, I have a 24 unit T14 and another 24 unit house as well. (tough keeping sparrows & starlings out, This year i have added 4 gourds to see if they prefer them. Keeping my finger crossed.

We were mentored by the Purple Martin Conservatory at Mulhurst Bay. Very close to us. Debra and Del Mckinnon made these as kits. So we bought the kit and they came over and showed us where in our heavily wooded area we would get martins. They also banded our babies for a few years.
It is my art work on the outside and the condo holds 12 families. They are deep cavities so the martins build their nest in the back. It has an owl guard so no owls have ever attacked. Plus i you can bring it down and clean it every year. Thanks all I love it too!

Yes that is a beautiful house! The holes look smaller than the standard round hole to me. I like seeing that female martin sticking her head out of the hole. Peek a boo!
