- Martin Colony History: Started trying to attract purple martins in 2012! It's finally happened in 2017! 5 years!!! ASY male and SY female came May 1st, fledged 5 babies!
Do you think the 80 degree temps next week will bring some SY's in southern Il. Should be close to 4 weeks from first arrivals in the area. I sure hope those temperatures stay. I have frost this morning, grandma always said Holy Week is always chilly. Maybe after Sunday we can be done with those up down temps. Everyone THINK SPRING! Sharon

- Martin Colony History: I have been exposed to purple martin sounds in utero when my mother went out to get my father away from his martin colony.
I played around the martin colony every summer and watched as my father maintained his colony. In the late 50's until the 70's he did not notice European Starlings in south Texas.
When old enough, I helped maintain his colony. My primary task was eliminating English House Sparrows with a 1956 Benjamin 317 .177 air rifle.
When I settled into my own home, I started my first colony with an original Trio Castle and Trio Grandpa. When I moved again, I did not put up any martin houses. Frustration with European Starlings in the Southeast US was overwhelming.
Found PMCA Forum and learned about modern enlarged compartments and SREHs.
Inherited my father's last martin house, a Trio Grandma, modified it to modern specifications and have had good results since then.

I am 250 miles due south of your location.
I am also ready for SYs, but have not sighted any SYs yet here.
I do not think that you will see any SYs yet.
A few ASYs are still stopping to visit and moving on north.
You might still be getting some ASYs in the next few days.
I hope that you will accept ASYs at your site. LOL.

TXLADY, For sure,posted a sy male yesterday and today as well ! Got a gut feeling it"s gonna bust wide open soon.I've had alot of activity here in ohio last several days,I'm confident that when this weather straightens out us small colony"s will get what we're looking for....Berndog

taxidermy lady -- Sure hope your right,, I'm also ready as I can be. Shooting starling every day, I think they are getting the picture, not to nest here. The weather is getting ready to change for the better and I'm sure we will have a great rush of Birds soon.

Things are so late this year - and it all goes back to cold spring last year, for much of Texas and other southern states. Late April cold snap last year caused our ASY birds to lose their eggs, and they laid new clutches later. Instead of our ASY nests starting to fledge around Memorial Day, they fledged late June, along with the subadult nests.
Since adults left late, they seem to be returning late too - and we have very few subadults back so far. Have only one nest with eggs - last year at this time we had plenty.
Some of these timing issues tie in with geolocator data, and we will have more information in the next Update (spring issue).
