Question about ponds and purple martins

How far can a pond be from martin houses in order to help attract the martins?

Terri,

According to the answer to question 11 in "Martin FAQ" at the top of the page, martins will fly up to several miles to find a pond or similar body of water.

There are 2 ponds less than 1/4 mile from my martin houses and then a third pond probably 1/2 mile away from my martin houses. I seem to be having trouble attracting martins, so I was just wondering if the ponds in my area were close enough.

Hi,
The closet pond to me is about 1/2 mile. I'm not sure how close water has to be, but I'm sure some must travel a couple of miles for water.
