I have 3 setups in a line . 2 gourd racks and 1 Trio MSS12. Well did nests checks and did goud racks 1rst. When I got to the house I saw 2 two day old babies and an egg on the porch. They looked nice and pink which I thought kind of weird if they were dead. When I got to them they were alive but half hanging over the porch but under the first railing under the porch. Which to me meant something had to pull their head thru railing. They did feel cool and so did the egg. So I quickly freed them and placed both egg and babies back in the nest with the other 2 babies , closed shop and raised house so the parents could get to them and maybe save their lives. I don't know this but I assume while doing nest checks on gourd racks that a SYM dragged them out while the parents were distracted by me. It was 76 ish degrees outside so I do believe it happened while I was nest checking. I am no pro at this but I would not think 2 day olds could live to long outside of nests in 76 degrees on a shaded metal surface. I estimate that it took me 20 minutes to find them. I will be curious to see if they make it. Next time will do house first and try to keep an eye on it while checking racks

Craig,

No expert here either, but I agree with the 2nd year male analysis. I have had a couple of firsts here myself which I feel there are no sure answers for but I won't get into them here. Hopefully they will make it. All you can do is watch and wait.

Martin Colony History: Start 2009 with one pair. Upgraded from S&K houses to two Trendsetter 12's with gourds beneath in 2013. I have experienced job, pet, and parental losses since '13. The Purple Martins lift my spirits and remind me how life continues forward by flying their little selves from Brazil back to my yard. As one forum person once told me, chin up DebA, look at the martins. Danger all around but yet they soar in the sky without a care in the world.

My fingers are crossed for them. Just heart wrenching and annoying that SYs do this.
