i lost two eggs while cranking a t-14 up. The cable banged and two eggs came out.
I'm just sick about it. It makes me want to stop next checks, although the last next check i found a dead female and i'm glad i got her out of there.
I now have 132 unhatched eggs and 22 babies.
Has anyone else ever done this.
thanks Dick

That's pretty unusual - eggs are usually in back of compartment, far away from entrance - so that must have been quite a jump - your winch may not be working correctly, and if it fails, you don't want to be underneath when the house comes down. Be careful, check over your winch system. Are you using nest trays?
It has happened to me once when I used to do nest checks before noon
, lost one egg. I now try and wait until after noon. I knock on the pole before lowering to try and notify them but I am still putting the odd egg back into the nest as the Female sometimes knocks one out of the back nest ( not out of the compartment). And that is just normal lowering of the T-14.

When I had Canaries, I tried not to startle a hen on the nest off, because when she jumped off she could have eggs in her feathers, and they would fall and break. So I agree with banging on the pole to notify the birds before lowering the house. I lower my housing often for nest checks, wind, or something else, and I take a coin to the pole first. In this case pmlover was cranking the house UP, I agree with Louise in all that she said. I hope that everybody that has these heavy housing systems are using the safety bolt correctly, on the way down stop just above the safety bolt an inch or two, and remove it; on the way up bring the house just an inch or two above the hole for the safety bolt, and replace it be safe! My T14 poles have a pulley just above the winch it makes for a smoother ride for the house going up and down. I have never had eggs falling from my housing so far, not that it couldn't happen.
