This will be a very interesting spring as I have switched all the round holes to crescents at the John Deere dealership colony that I mentor. I gave the old wood house some porch dividers as well to increase the occupancy. The round holed SG's were also switched to crescent SG's with S&K porches in and out. The number of starlings invading the site this spring was overwhelming, there were 4 complete starling nests in the 12 round holed SG's. The sparrows have been staying away for the time being, but I have two repeating bait traps ready just in case. This colony site is on a busy highway and get's a lot of attention in the community, I am hoping that switching to SREH's will relieve some of the anxiety landlords have towards going all SREH.

Good luck Kelly,
Between the sparrows, starlings, parasites and weather it is truly amazing that these beautiful little birds survive.
A great part of it must be due to our efforts.
I was a little disappointed earlier this year as the pms seemed hesitant, afraid and unable to enter the sres.
My fears were unfounded as they now enter and exit as if they'd been doing it for years.
Keep fighting the good fight!!

I finally made the connection that this "John Deere" colony was profiled in a back issue of Update: Summer 2004, Vol. 13(3).
As a "PR" guy, may I suggest that you contact John Deer PR and tell them about your efforts. They've surely got a magazine and could profile the colony. Probably a lot of people who buy John Deere mowers have good martin habitats -- ha.

Hey Kelly-
When I "took over" the Memory Lake Colony in Gratsburg WI, I built a new martin house and put it in a new location several hundred feet from the old house. I also added crescent SREH. The martins took to the new house, new location and the crescents without any problems at all. Don't worry about the new entrances they will be fine!
Have any of the martins returned yet to the John Deere site? Two martins have returned to the Memory Lake Colony as of April 13.
Any martins spotted at your home site? ...nothing at mine yet.

Hi Daryl-
The Martins are late returning to John Deere this year. Last year they arrived around the 12th of April (3 males, 1 female). No martins here yet....dawnsong and daytime chatter are running daily.
