This is our second year as landlords and we are looking for a good digital camera for the martins, AND, other wildlife. We are in the country, our Martin houses and gourds are about 30 yards from the house. Right now, we have wild turkeys who are flaring their tail feathers and strutting about 150-200 yards from the house. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks-Jodie

Can you provide budget, skill level, and such?

I recommend the nikon P-510 which is a point and shoot. I have a D-5100 DSLR . The P-510 camera has a 1000mm zoomable lens and will get you close up shots at a fraction of the costs of higher price DSLR's.

Martin Colony History: Had my site up to 22 gourds of which most (+/-3) stayed occupied.
Downsized to 17 gourds due to back surgeries. Had 14 families in 2017 but did not do nest checks due to health. Feeling better in 2018 and hoping for a good year.

Malcolm, I really don't know much about cameras, so while reading the review you so kindly gave the link for, I expected to see a huge price pinned to it. That is a very nice camera for what seems to me to be a very nice price!! I am definitely going to put that on my Mother's Day wish list. :) Lots and lots to like about it but I really like the grip on that thing.
I didn't really need another "want" on my list but I don't think I can pass that one up. So thanks but, curses (of the nicest kind :P ) on you too for letting me know there was something else I just have to have!!

Malcolm-Thanks so much for your suggestion and link for the camera. I have been searching the web today, and yes, this is definitely just what we are looking for. We are on our way up to Best Buy to get one this afternoon.

Connie-Here's hoping you get one for Mother's Day.

Dorn-Thanks for your response, my post was rather vague!

Happy Martining everybody!

Update:

I just returned from Best Buy & Wal-Mart. Nikon apparently is updating the P-150's by changing where the view finder is attached. There is no change in the models otherwise, and, where the view finder is attached is a non-issue for me. The stores are putting the older models on sale, and, they are selling their floor models now as their store stock becomes depleted. I was able to get the floor model at Best Buy for $291.00 (which included a battery with battery charger) and all the original items. Wal-Mart has their floor models on for $299, but, with no battery or charger (you'll have to pay extra for these). These prices are about $100 off the original prices, so, if anyone is interested, this is a good time to try and snap one up. We're pleased with our purchase, and, are sitting in the backyard, waiting for the martins to come in for the night, and, will try to snap some pictures.

I made a typo. The camera is a Nikon P-510 (not P 150). The new model is the P-520.

I use a Cannon SLR Rebel for pictures, and a Kodak Playsport Video camera for my nest camera pictures and video. The Kodak is really nice to edit jpg pictures from video.

Jodie how's the camera working out? I looked at the P-510 camera last year at my local camera store and was impressed with the 1000mm telephoto fixed lens.

I should stop visiting this forum! Last night I ordered the P510. And, I haven't even seen a martin let alone own one. Fur shure I have caught the PM Disease. I have spent so much money I'm gonna have to get a second mortgage on my home to ensure the martins have a nice comfortable and save place to live. I'm doing all I can trying to resist ordering Hammerli 850 super air rifle. ( $400.00 ). Are there any pills one can take to treat this disease?

2016 - Dagnabbit - Still a lonely wannabe landlord. :-(
2015 - Still no martins
2014 - No luck yet... Not seeing many martins in the area.
2013 - First year trying. I've done everything to attract PM's except giving them free airfare to get here. Maybe I'll do that too !!!

Funny thing how every thing that I buy for my Martin passion runs around $400. First the gourd rack and gourds then the camera right before I left for MartinFest in 2009 and then the Beeman R7 after I read here how great it was.

I don't know how you can live without a really good air rifle  I got 3 sparrows so far today.
