Hello All,
It saddened me to learn of the passing on March 2, 2013 of a friend and mentor here in the Pacific Northwest, David R. Fouts.
Dave played a crucial role during the last 3 decades in Purple Martin recovery efforts in the Pacific Northwest. He certainly was instrumental in providing me the encouragement and patience in the effort to attract martins to my colony site here in Silver Lake, WA.
He had been recognized through the PMCA and was mentioned in numerous publications of the Update magazine, including having been selected as Landlord of the year a few years ago.
His dedicated passion for helping martins as well as his loyal friendship will be dearly missed.

- Martin Colony History: Started backyard colony at Silver lake in June 2004 with single pair of SY martins. Built a nest, no eggs, they left by late July. Returned 2005 and colony grew to three pair successfully raising and fledging 15 healthy young. In 2018 this colony was 110 pair strong and thriving. Managed a small colony along the lower Columbia river west of Longview, WA for a few years prior to starting my colony at Silver Lake.

- Martin Colony History: Start 2009 with one pair. Upgraded from S&K houses to two Trendsetter 12's with gourds beneath in 2013. I have experienced job, pet, and parental losses since '13. The Purple Martins lift my spirits and remind me how life continues forward by flying their little selves from Brazil back to my yard. As one forum person once told me, chin up DebA, look at the martins. Danger all around but yet they soar in the sky without a care in the world.

Dave's effort to save Purple Martins along the Oregon coast created a legacy that lives on. I doubt martins had a more devoted caretaker anywhere.

Well over a year has passed, and I still haven't taken to heart the idea that Dave Fouts is no longer plying the Columbia River and its shorelines installing and maintaining housing for martins. I'm still waiting to wake up from this bad dream.
Yesterday I took advantage of a minus low tide, and "spent the day with Dave" , checking nests at English Boom, a colony started many years ago, under Dave's tutelage, on the north end of Camano Island, a colony using single wooden nestboxes attached to abandoned estuarine pilings, a textbook example of a Northwest martin colony from the early days of the regional recovery .
The oldest young I found were about 12 days. Many pairs are still on eggs, The season here starts and runs late. Occasionally very late pairs do not fledge young until September.

- Martin Colony History: Started trying to attract purple martins in 2012! It's finally happened in 2017! 5 years!!! ASY male and SY female came May 1st, fledged 5 babies!
He's thanking you for doing that everyday Stan! That is sweet of you!

- Martin Colony History: 22 year landlord, 14 at current residence..offering 9 racks and a homemade T-8 for 166 total cavities. 160 Pair in 2018 Racks consist of a Deluxe 12, AAA 16, Starburst 16, 2 K-18 Series, Super 24, 2 Gemini, Multi-purpose/two trio’s/4gourds and a T-8..Great hobby to be involved in..
