I just got my new T-14 house and I love it. I'd like to protect the nest boxes with something. This would also make them easier to clean at the end of the season.

Can I use oil base paint and paint the inside of the nest box? Can I use a primer/sealer in the inside of the nest boxes? Who's had experience with this and how did you seal yours? Thanks for the help!

Most landlords don't paint or seal the insides of bird houses, for martins, bluebirds, etc. Many use slide-out nest trays, which can be made of wood, styrofoam, or cardboard.

I have slide out nest trays. I'd like to seal the wood to preserve it and make it easier to clean. These trays won't last long as messy as Martin nest get if there's not something to protect the wood.

Can't believe someone hasn't thought of this yet

I have three cedar bungalows and used a moisture sealer on the interior of them to make cleaning them easier.

I decided to cut out some liners for my nest boxes. Painted them with oil base paint for easy cleaning.

There is no need to use a liner ! The bottom of your nest trays should not be smooth, rough cut cedar is best,(if they are wooden) and there is no need to paint them. The inside of a TROYER-14 stays dry for the most part. Yes purple martins nests get DIRTY!!! The birds don't mind, and it don't hurt them. I never wash (use water) inside my cedar T14's. I scrape the worst out, then use my shop vacuum, and set them (nest trays) in the sun. Birds are not human there is no need to use MR. Clean, or other chemicals to clean inside wooden birdhouses. After they have been in the hot sunshine for a few days, I add some Sevin, and put them back in the T-14's. I store all birdhouse in my shop for the off season.
If you keep your nest trays dry they should last for a long, long time!

Thanks for the information Leandortree! That's what I needed to hear. Nothing like an experienced Landlord to set the record straight.

It looks like you've got a colony about twice the size as mine. Here's to another great year!
