Is there a "quiet" brake winch?
When I'm trapping sparrows before the season starts, I tend to raise and lower my housing early in the morning to insert or remove traps. I'm sure my neighbors are disturbed by my winch's clicking, which is pretty loud, especially if you're trying to sleep. Is there such thing as a "quiet" brake winch that doesn't click so loud when you raise it? The winch I'm currently using is the one that came with my PMCA Multi-Purpose pole.

Is this the kind, like on my Trendsetter, that has a little lever under it that serves as the brake? I don't like to hear it click, so I flip the lever off (back, I think) and hold pressure on the handle while I'm turning, quietly. But if I were to turn loose of the handle, it the house would fall. Maybe you have the type of winch where you cannot disengage the brake...
I can't find any lever to disengage the clicker. I'm quite happy with the winch except for the noise it makes. They may all be like that though. I just don't have a lot of experience with other brake winches.John Miller wrote:Maybe you have the type of winch where you cannot disengage the brake...

- Martin Colony History: Had my site up to 22 gourds of which most (+/-3) stayed occupied.
Downsized to 17 gourds due to back surgeries. Had 14 families in 2017 but did not do nest checks due to health. Feeling better in 2018 and hoping for a good year.
tcg,
I don't know what kind you have but mine drove me crazy too...then I found if I move the brake just a hair back it will kind of catch in the middle and stop making the clicking noise. It is sort of in the middle of on and off.....let me know if that helps...

TCG - If you are talking about the DL 350A brake winch it makes a loud and robust clicking sound when you raise your gourd rack or house, but no click when you are lowering it, But it is a very good sturdy winch i don't know that i would want to trust any other as much.

Yep, that's the one I have. It is a good winch. So I guess I'll just live with the noise.JL Murray wrote:If you are talking about the DL 350A brake winch it has a loud and quite hearty clicking sound when you raise your gourd rack or house, but no click when you are lowering it. Perhaps you can talk to the neighbor explaining to them what the winch does and why it clicks and tell them that you hope the clicking does not bother them, chances are they will be neighborly and tell you it doesn't.

could you use some heavy Grease like axle or Bearing Grease???
I would think that may quiet it a bit.
I have a D&L Brake Winch Model 350A on my setup

I stand Corrected , I was told not to use Bearing or axle Grease .
Sorry that posted incorrect info.
I was told , If you want to lubricate your winch use "gear lubricant" and ONLY do the "gear" of the winch. Do not use oil or grease as that could get into the braking mechanism.
D&L Winches only make the noise when raising the rack. Thats because the brake mechanism is in play. Should the handle slip the brake is engaged. When lowering the winch, no noise is present.

I've been Googling for an hour now trying to find a diagram that shows the lubrication points and types of lubricants to use on different parts and gears of a DL brake winch. It's critical to Not use the wrong lubricant on the brake portion.
Can anybody find such a diagram on the internet?
Thanks,
Jeff

- Martin Colony History: Area is rural. Offer 28 compartments...metal housing (Lonestar Goliad) & Supergourds all w/crescent entrance holes. Purple martins are abundant here and eager for quality, well maintained, safe housing. Expect near 100% occupancy this season.
This may help...take a look at winch maintenance on the bottom of page 2 & the diagram on page 4.
