Martin Colony History: 2017 Had a lot visitors no Matins nesting, hoping 2018 will be different.

2019 had 30 pair

Martin Colony History: 5th year hostess. Currently 58 confirmed breeding pair. 218 Fledged, 35 older nestlings, 2 new nests with 8 nestlings. 100% occupancy

Martin Colony History: First pair in 2009 after 28 years of trying. 3 pairs 2010, 17 pairs 2011 and 35-45 pairs since. Many additional colonies are now springing up around mine in an area once completely void of Martins. I offer 50 compartments at my site consisting of primarily Excluder II gourds on Gemini racks. Also a wooden T-14. I utilize electric fence type predator guards on the base of the poles. Supplemental feeding is crucial in maintaining my colony. I platform feed throughout the season as needed. My site tends to be a stop over point for additional birds as they migrate further north.

You can breath easy now. It is scary that second year waiting isn't it? Almost wonder if you dreamed you had them the prior year.

Quite a relief when you see that first Martin however. I am happy for you.

Supplemental feeding plays a major role in Western Pennsylvania. Finally got my 1st pair in 2009 after 28 years of effort. The colony has grown quickly to 45 pairs that I care for. Many new colonies have now sprung up around me in the past few years as well. Where there was none.... there is many.

Martin Colony History: I moved to South Florida, from Delaware, in August of 2015.

I care for a 6 condo Sunset House as well as two Deluxe Gourd Racks, with 24 Chirpynest/Excluder gourds, along a canal in Pompano Beach, Florida.


At Quiet Waters Park, nearby in Deerfield Beach, I care for a Deluxe Gourd Rack with 12 TVG's. I also care for a Deluxe Gourd rack with 12 Excluder gourds with Modified Excluder entrances. I am substituting 6 Chirpynest boxes for 6 of the Conley II entranced gourds in 2026.

At another local park, Tradewinds Park in Coconut Creek, I care for a Trendsetter 12, 5 gourds rack with 60 Excluder gourds with Modified Excluder Entrances and 1 Deluxe Gourd Rack with 12 Troyer Vertical Gourds with Starling Stoppers over the Conley II's to keep out smaller starlings.

YAHOOOOO!!!!!!! OFF and RUNNING, Jim!!!!! Congrats

Martin Colony History: Colony started - 2007 with one pair
As of 2018 - 84 cavities offered, max # of pairs hosted - 82.

So glad for you James - I know you really struggled and hoped for a long time!

:grin: :grin: Thanks everyone for the support and drive to keep going. I could not believe what I heard and I ran to the door and saw the female on top of the house and the male with his head out of a gourd. I think my dogs thought I was crazy. I then did the happy dance.

Congrats James, I was beginning to think someone had closed the flyway to FL. & GA. While Martins have been literally pouring into TX.

Also attempting to restart another one in southwestern PA, in Collier Township's Hilltop Park. In 2017, not sure what happened but the ASY male returned and then a couple of weeks later he was gone. It could have been weather related. No other birds showed up. I had a starling nesting at the Public site that I had trouble getting rid of.
In 2018, we fledged 629 martins at all of the sites.

Hope you have a great season and these two birds bring in a lot of other pairs.

:grin: Thanks everyone for your warm wishes and on my colony expanding. Thanks for all your help over the years and standing behind me. I know I will never have a colony like Steve, but I am just as proud as he is when he is standing and watching. I hope everyone gets the numbers they wish and produce lot of babies.
