Hi,
Some of you my know me from my participation in geolocator research but what you may not know is that I am also an artisan of fine silver jewelry. I am dedicating all profits from the sale of my jewelry to support geolocator research from my Mid-Atlantic PUMA colony. If you are interested in helping give some much needed support for geolocator research while enjoying a unique piece of handmade, nature-inspired jewelry, please visit my website at www.birdswithbackpacks.com to learn about the research and visit the store page where you will find the jewelry. I will also be adding a blog-type page to keep people abreast of the progress, trials and tribulations of my geolocator research. You can also visit my Etsy store titled BWBJewelry at: http://www.etsy.com/shop/BWBJewelry?ref=si_shop where you will find a slightly larger assortment. New jewelry is added regularly!

great site.. love what you are doing. can you explain some missing dates on your martin travel maps. for example one map shows a martin flying the gulf in two days but doesn't show where he was the middle day.

Hope that makes sense.

I am also interested in hearing about hte bird tracked for 2 migrations.

Hi,

I am not sure which bird you are talking about but there could be a few reasons why a particular data point is not included. First would be if it is considered an important data point. Does it yield valuable information about the migration or does it only serve to clutter the map? Another reason could be that there is some doubt as to the validity of the data point. Geolocators work by measuring light levels to determine length of day and night. If, for example, a bird decides to move in and out of a heavily shaded area right before sunset, you will get an anomaly in the data. In this case, you may decide to disregard the whole day because you cannot precisely determine actual sunset. Scrubbing the data can be very tricky, especially around the equinox when length of day equals length of night. During these times, it is virtually impossible to determine latitude, which is measured by length of day vs. length of night. Routes during the equinox are shown using dashed lines.

I am amazed about the migration similarities in my double tracked bird. The timing of the migration routes is very similar except for the fact that as a third year bird, it arrived at my colony two weeks earlier than it did as a second year bird which is exactly as we would expect. It also roosted in a southern area of Brazil, which was visited by only 2 (of 30) other martins. It visited this roost both years! Another interesting fact is that this bird fledged young on the same day both years!! We hope to have several new double tracked birds this season. It will be interesting to see if other birds behaved similarly.

Hi Again,

Just thought I would bump this up for those of you that haven't seen it yet. While geolocator season is getting nearer, funding, unfortunately, is taking it's time!

Take a look at the Birds with Backpacks website and see if there is some jewelry or even just some information that you find interesting!

Cheers!
