Do sparrows eat crickets
I just started putting crickets on the porch of my Trio to help my Martins feed their little ones. I checked the house about 5 hours later, and found an empty porch. I was happy with what I found, and then my wife said that the wind probably blew them off, or the sparrows ate them. I trap all my sparrows but once in a while some young sparrow show up. Will they eat large crickets? Jim

Probably sparrows did not eat them. Usually...house sparrows only capture bugs to take to young in the nest. You'll sometimes see a house sparrow chasing a moth- to take to their young. After the young fledge, they all eat seed.
I have read that in the late 1800s and early 1900s, house sparrows actually were released in different parts of the country -- even Hawaii -- for agricultural insect pest control. Then these bright ag experts figured out above -- too late.
