Martin Colony History: Purple Martin Landlord since 2006

I performed a weelkly nest check and this morning and discovered a gourd with "EIGHT EGGS" ! I was shocked since I know I didn't miss them last week. I guess this is going to be the standard around my colony, having a late group of fledglings in July just as last season. A quarter of my nests have fledged already.

Martin Colony History: Erected 1st house in 1997. Birds were checking it out before Mike got down from the ladder. Six cavities had a little colony 1st year. Grown to 88 cavities all gourds with near 100% occupancy. Most important factor for success is rain = bugs.

Me, too, Virgil. My nest check yesterday revealed 15 nests still contain young and 5 nests contain eggs. Everybody else has fledged!!

I guess that means our colony is 3/4 finished. But, it's really more than that. Those five nests with eggs are all in old (already fledged) cavities. I hope they all make it!!
Sincerely,
Laverne

As cooperative as the weather has been this season I think they will.

We're more than 1/2 fledged, but also seeing new nests - most are renests, after first clutches failed to hatch. It's been quite a year so far - could use some rain to help the later nests along.

Experiencing the same here in Florida. I have had 18 nest's fledge but, still have 6 late nest here. It will be early July before all are gone. This has happened here the last 3 seasons but, all successfully fledged in the past. Hope this year proves to be the same. Gets awfully hot here in late June. Good luck to all with the late nestlings.
