I don’t have the perfect site. One open flyway with trees within 80 ft. I do have a small pond they utilize during the heat of Summer. (2017) HEAVY HAWK PREDATION

The photos are good documentation - although mockers are not cavity nesters, here's one building in a very nice martin set-up.

Years back, we published an article and photos in the Update about this very unusual nest, when Texas landlord Tom Dellinger observed a mocker building in an unused wooden martin house - I'll find that reference if I can.

I figured out what the white fluffy material is thats lining the center of the nest. I was talking to my neighbor while working in my yard and here came one of the birds with a mouth full. We watched it go back to his yard to gather more. My neighbor said his son ran over an old boat cushion with a lawn mower.

I knew some wouldn't believe what I first posted. Here is my proof.


Who would have ever thought that my first nest check would be a Mockingbird. :shock:

Martin Colony History: Colony started - 2007 with one pair
As of 2018 - 84 cavities offered, max # of pairs hosted - 82.

Glynn, great pictures! I love mocking birds...just not in my housing. :lol: :lol:

Not sure if this is appropriate for the forum. I just wanted to update my mocking bird activity. They now have at least three eggs. Forgot my mirror. :oops: but I know there are at least three.

Martin Colony History: Erected 1st house in 1997. Birds were checking it out before Mike got down from the ladder. Six cavities had a little colony 1st year. Grown to 88 cavities all gourds with near 100% occupancy. Most important factor for success is rain = bugs.

Hey Glynn.

I'm one of those who would never believe this unless I saw it with my own eyes. So, I do believe it is appropriate for this Forum. If I had seen just the nest, I would have guessed it was a Purple Martin production.

Thanks for sharing with us. I'm learning that there are exceptions to every rule!!

Maybe that Mockingbird will attract some Purple Martins! :wink:

Thanks for posting the photos, very interesting for sure. Watch your back while performing nest checks - they're typically not too friendly, or scared!
2010: two pair nested, 1 bird fledged.
2011: starlings/sparrows destroyed nests. I shut down the house early to save PM lives.
2012: new T-14 with SREH, & a Beeman R7. Four fledged this year.
2013: Destroyed many house sparrows, but fledged 21 PM's!

I just wanted to let everyone know, yesterday at thirteen days old my three little mocking birds took the leap out of the Trio house. 8) As fait would have it, I was able to witness the last little one jump towards his siblings who were in a near by elaeagnus hedge.

This morning they were all three still in that same hedge. I am a little concerned though, I only saw one of the parents feeding them. Yesterday there was a sharpy hanging around like it knew there was an easy meal to be had. Both parents along with robins and bluejays stayed after it. I'll go back and watch a little more to make sure.

I know they are not martins but I feel really lucky to have hosted them. The parents were never fussy towards me, not even during nest. checks. :) I hope they all survive. It will be interesting next year to see if they return :?:

Great update Glynn!
It has been really cool reading your updates, and seeing the photos of the mockers nest in your Martin housing.
