Central Indiana nest checks

I thought I would post the dates and numbers as many have contacted me wanting the info . 5-13 -2012 I had 53 active nest with 219 purple martin eggs . On 5-20- 2012 I had 88 active nest with 420 purple martin eggs . I estimate around 250 purple martins @ my colony @ this time and I am estimating around 600 eggs this year if everything keeps going good . I see more and more martins coming daily and I have not seen any flying insects in my back yard ! And just think , I started out with just a small 12 room plastic house , thought i raised martins in it the first year only to find out I had raised a family of tree swallows ( OOPS ) Everyone have a great martin year !

Did another nest check on 5/20/2012. I had 66 pair with 327 eggs and many more nest without eggs. I also have lots of martins showing upu every day.

- Martin Colony History: Erected 1st house in 1997. Birds were checking it out before Mike got down from the ladder. Six cavities had a little colony 1st year. Grown to 88 cavities all gourds with near 100% occupancy. Most important factor for success is rain = bugs.
Great numbers!! Go Indiana!! So happy to hear about your successful colonies.

Today I have babies. Did nest check here in south central indiana and have 74 pair with 387 eggs and babies and my subbie pairs havent started laying yet.
