SO I get home today and notice piles of twigs on the porches of one side of one of my houses. I go inside, and wait for a few , look out the window, and see mockingbirds steadily bringing twigs up to the porch like they were nest building. I go out, clean them off, it was a handful, and they go right back, hanging around, but didn't bring anymore. Of course, they cant get in the compartments, and theyre not cavity dwellers, at least i didn't think so. I guess they just thought they'd build on the porch. Good grief! Starlings, sparrows, not mockingbirds too???

Cavities are odd for mockingbirds, they usually like thick shrubs and will build a nest about head high - then become very territorial.
2010: two pair nested, 1 bird fledged.
2011: starlings/sparrows destroyed nests. I shut down the house early to save PM lives.
2012: new T-14 with SREH, & a Beeman R7. Four fledged this year.
2013: Destroyed many house sparrows, but fledged 21 PM's!

During my observing them for the few minutes I did, they were just puttting them on the porch. They were way to big to get in the SREH's. But yes, I thought it quite odd!

Maybe they're bored with just mocking PM sounds? They're acting like them too!

I have mockingbirds too, they leave my martins alone but are tough on the robins. Just last evening a robin and mockingbird flew across my yard with the mocking bird just inches from the robins tail.

We have a very large mockingbird population here in SW Florida, and I have never seen what was described. The mockingbirds do their thing and the Purple Martins do theirs. They will occassionally form an alliance and go after the crows, which I thoroughly enjoy. Both birds have excellent dive bombing skills. The mockingbirds will occassionally sit on one the Purple Martin perches, but that's it.
