Luckily this guy missed again. This is actually a smaller hawk from the last time. This makes three times this year I was able to photograph a hawk with its talons wrapped around plastic. To my knowledge we have not lost a live Martin this year. This guy didn't play by the rules and attacked at 2:00 pm.

That's one handsome bird, but he needs to move on, right? We have a hawk hanging around up at the lake, but so far a pair of crows has stayed all over him every time he appears. They run him back across the lake. Hope they keep up the good work!!

Good luck this season.

Ken&Sheryle ,
Excellent Hawk Pic , I have had several attacks repeadly the last few days but they happen so fast and are gone before i can get any pic's. I have already lost a asy female to a hawk but he didn't take his prize, i threw the rake at him and the hawk dropped to martin so i burried her.
That Hawk you took the pic of looks like a Sharp-Shinned to me, man those Hawks make me Nervous!!!!!

Wishing everyone a Great Martin Year
Happy Martining for 2022 to everyone,

BEAUTIFUL pics of an adult Accipiter, I'm guessing Sharp-shin (note the "pencil legs", small size).

Accipiter eyes turn a deeper shade of red with age, and those on this bird look pretty dark. By all the signs a survivor.

The good news being that his nesting territory lies somewhere far up north.

...and I'll edit in, what a good testimony to the effectiveness of martin decoys on fooling hawks. I'll be adding a few myself next year.

Sharp-Shinned Hawk no doubt about it!!! Adult!!
What I would like to know if you or your close neighbors are feeding the local population of native birds or possibly a park nearby with pigeons or mourning doves ?
These particularly like to hang around feeders waiting for the perfect kill when the birds are concentrating on feeding.
Thats their trademark!!
Sure wish they would go for the S$S's but they probably are like eating broccoli or something in bird tastes!!
Decoys seem to working or could actually be drawing accipiters to you housings. Tough call on this one.
Good pictures !!!

Good job Ken&Sheryle! Don't worry, if you have martins it is not the decoys that are drawing the hawks to your martin housing.

Hi ya'll.

No, we don't have any birdfeeders out whatsoever..except hummingbird feeders.  I don't think our neighbors behind us have any bird feeders either. We have about 30 or 40 Purple Martins. I am sure the noise of all of them is attracting the Hawks. This year it seems worse than last year. I am realizing how important...at least to me ..having decoys. The last three times...each time the Hawks went for the slowest Martin..hence the decoys...so hopefully, they will go away SOON.

Have a GREAT evening.
