Thursday March 29, 2012 killed one starling --- Friday the 30th killed another starling --- Yesterday killed one starling and 1 english sparrow. This morning before the crack of dawn, I moved into shooting position using my truck to camo my presence. In a very short time, a starling landed on one of the gourd racks. Another one bites the dust. About 15 mins. passed and another one bites the dust. I sat there for awhile and saw nothing else that i was interested in shooting. I went to get ready for church and after that, I checked to see if there were any trash birds around my site. I sat in my truck for awhile and I saw a starling hover over the dead starlings that I had killed yesterday and this morning.
I hope he gets the idea: (DON'T COME AROUND HERE NO MORE)
The martins do not seem to be bothered at my eliminating these trash birds.
Well HAPPY MARTIN YEAR TO EVERYONE!!!!!
I have a few over 50 birds at my site now.

You can please some of the martins some of the time, but you can't please all the martins all of the time.

Yeah they do, I had 3 in my trap this morning, only 2 hrs after sun up. 3 more were flying around the trap.
I never realized how big a problem starlings were, until I started this martin project. I think there needs to be a wider public education on the issue.

Well they sure have been a problem for me this year. First year that I have seen a starling breech a Conley II entrance. I don't think the male could get through but the female was considerably smaller. She is resting now in BIRD _ _ LL now. I opened up the troyer horizontal gourd and tossed the 4 eggs that she had already laid. They are so nasty. Eventually they will get the idea that I don't want them around or (SUFFER THE COSEQUENCES)
I try to make it as easy for my feathered family.
Starlings BEWARE, mess aroud here and it will take you to an early grave.

There too many s&s
Just drive into town or anywhere and the first thing you hear is either a starling or sparrow chirping away.just think all the sparrows and starlings in a 50 mile radius....and then put them on top of me.I probably would die from all that weight!!What a way to go!!

Joe, you are doing a great job on the starlings ! I once had a huge starling problem when I first tried to start a colony and now cant beg a starling to even stop to look @ my colony. Have killed in the thousands by trapping and shooting over the past 7 years and @ one time I thought it would be a great idea to keep track of the kills with an orange crayon on the side of one of the traps. The orange marks got so hi on the trap I could'nt reach any higher and quit marking them . On one trap I stopped the markings in one year when the marks got over two hundred .Believe me , it's a good thing when people come over to view purple martins and " NO " trash birds " NONE" are in with the martins ! I do kinda miss shooting the starlings out of my lazy boy and sometimes wish one would stop in but I remember what my goal was when I started the war ! You are doing a great thing !

I am up to 15 now on my trap. Pretty consistently getting one every 2 or 3 days now.

rr, johnny, dorn, and dan, I appreciate the replies and just think that each time I kill one of these idiots that could amount to several over the years. Hundreds and even thousands are likely for a long period of time.
This morning was the first morning in a great while that I did not see one of the dirty birds. So I guess that I have helped to eliminate the problem or part of it for now.
This is the first year that I have had any problem with these birds, and this is probably just the beginning for years to come. Well as long as they keep making lead, DIRTY BIRDS BEWARE.
In residence now I have about a hundred and twenty five. I am looking for more to come for a few days. Lots of fighting and bickering over nesting gourds but that being natural.
Well if any more of the filthy, dirty birds bite the dust in the next day or two, I will let you folks know.
Have a great year in the martin world..
