Martin Colony History: First started in Gretna, La in 1969 with a small homemade house, have had martins ever since at 2 different homes in Texas

I keep getting private messages usually with questions. Is not the forum the place for such questions? Other people may have the same questions but they cannot benefit from my reply to a private message. I think that I will quit opening such messages, If you have any questions, ask them on the forum. Does anyone else have such a problem, or what is your opinion?

Some folks are intimated or just for privacy prefer not to ask their questions in public, especially if they suspect their question is wacky...like last time I emailed you a PM - ha. As I get only a few, I usually answer. You probably get more as are well known and in Texas, where there's lots of folks trying to attract martins.

Emil...I would have to agree with you, their are times for private
messages But the best way to learn about martins, and how and what
to do best for them is to read all you can, the forum is the best
place that i have found for getting that information.
I have really got some good information on the forum that has
helped me a lot.
I want to think you and all the other great landlords that take your
time to put great information on here for others to be able to read
and learn from it. :) :)
Hope you'll have a great martin season.

Martin Colony History: First pair in 2009 after 28 years of trying. 3 pairs 2010, 17 pairs 2011 and 35-45 pairs since. Many additional colonies are now springing up around mine in an area once completely void of Martins. I offer 50 compartments at my site consisting of primarily Excluder II gourds on Gemini racks. Also a wooden T-14. I utilize electric fence type predator guards on the base of the poles. Supplemental feeding is crucial in maintaining my colony. I platform feed throughout the season as needed. My site tends to be a stop over point for additional birds as they migrate further north.

Regardless of what you decide to do about PM Emil... you have really been super about answering so many questions on this forum.

Everyone should respect that and try not to send you PM unless it is private in nature. Glad you spoke up.

I know I learned so much from you throughout the years and would certainly nominate you for an award.

Thanks Emil
Supplemental feeding plays a major role in Western Pennsylvania. Finally got my 1st pair in 2009 after 28 years of effort. The colony has grown quickly to 45 pairs that I care for. Many new colonies have now sprung up around me in the past few years as well. Where there was none.... there is many.

Emil,
I am new to the forum and PMCA. Last year I put up a purple martin house. I've read much of what PMCA post on their site, and I read a whole lot of what's posted on the forum. You can pretty much tell right away who's experienced and who has great knowledge about PM and you are probable one of those people. I had so many questions last year, and sometimes after reading the post I was even more unsure of what to do and started second guessing myself, because everyone on this forum has their own opinion about how to do things.
Last year I sent a private message to Steve Kroenke because first, I knew he was very knowledgeable from reading his articles on the PMCA site and secondly he was from Louisiana and so am I , so I knew he would be familar with PM in this state.
I was so grateful when I got a response from him. He gave me a lot of good advice. I saved the message he sent to me, and refer back to it when needed.
Please know that if you are getting a lot of private messages, it's because people respect you opinion, and you are well liked.
And sometimes it's better to get one great opinion, that 100 other ones.

Emil this reminds me of the guy who was pushing bats and had you convinced to put up a bat house and when you asked for more advice he told you to go google bats and everything about them instead of answering your questions.
I loved your response!
He couldn't figure out why you weren't interested any more! This is what most bird forums are for, to learn from others and share experiences so others can learn!
